Snowy books for snowy days

After a couple of dry years, this winter has been a very snowy one here in South Dakota. I have to say, I’m digging it — pun intended! The snow is beautiful and bright. It brings a layer of quiet and calm to our days. And it makes playing outside much more fun, even if it is usually too cold to pack into snowmen.

While March might bring thoughts of spring to your region, we’re deep in snowy days here. So we’re still reading favorite snow and winter picture books . Here’s a little roundup. And tell me, what are some of your favorite picture books about snow? There are so many good ones!

A Big Bed For Little Snow by Grace Lin

I love how this creative story reads like an origin myth. The illustrations and the playful relationship between the mother and child also get top marks from me. My kids think this story is funny and they think Little Snow is quite sneaky. It’s a fun, snowy bedtime read for any time of year!

Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner and illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal

This is a favorite of mine as we learn about who is living above and below the snow — it’s such a fun way to engage kids in thinking about animals and habitats and the different patterns creatures follow. Take it as a great prompt to head out and look for tracks in the snow afterward!

Snowbots by Aaron Reynolds and illustrated by David Barneda

Little robots get a snow day! My kids love robots, and all the little things that make these mechanical children different from regular children — like warming up with mugs of axle grease — made them giggle.

This Place in the Snow by Rebecca Bond

Another Rebecca Bond book, Bravo Maurice, was the first book given to my first child before she was born, so I have a soft spot in my heart for this author/illustrator. In This Place in the Snow, neighborhood kids work together to turn a snow mountain into a kingdom all their own. It reminds me of the magic of childhood and the possibility of a blank slate of a huge pile of snow.
