Library Lovers’ Month: Valentines for my library

I recently read that it is Library Lovers’ Month starting today. Happy February and happy Library Lovers’ Month!

I’m a huge fan of the library for many reasons, and I’ll be counting them in upcoming blog posts. Though my focus is on my love of libraries for children’s literature, the truth is I love libraries for all the content and programming they offer and all the people they serve.

For February, I’m writing a few quick valentines for my library, the Brookings Public Library:

• I love the librarians! Always smiling and friendly and ready to help me and my kiddos find what we need.

• I love the children’s department. It’s full of low shelves of picture books, bins of board books, cozy rugs, and even toys and games. There are little nooks to disappear into and open spaces to play with new friends.

• I love the specialty items to check out. I know of libraries that have all manner of unique items to check out, from athletic equipment to musical instruments. Some things my kids love to check out include board games, robot kits (like Little Bits and Snap Circuits kits), craft kits (with many supplies included!), and music CDs.

I hope you can celebrate Library Lovers’ Month with a trip to your local library this February. If you need ideas for books to look for with your little one, check out my Picture Book Haul series (more posts forthcoming).
